Mailbag: Please say, âyouâre welcome,â not âno problemâ
The memo must have come down sometime a decade ago while I was playing golf or busy seeing patients. Whenever it was, I never got the clue when a whole generation altered their response to âthank youâ from âyouâre welcomeâ to âno problem.â Could it have crept up on me so perniciously that by the time I realized the change, an entire decade had passed?
The only people who still respond to âthank youâ with âyouâre welcomeâ are those nearing 50 or older. Everyone younger seems to have effortlessly made the conversion to âno problem.â
Does it matter? Well, if hearing mature adults greet you with âHey!â instead of âHello,â or answering everything with the exclamation of âawesome!â doesnât bother you, âno problemâ shouldnât either. But this isnât just a matter of semantics or a form of generational slang.
Psychologically, it represents an inherent shift of perspective. To say âyouâre welcomeâ to me when I say âthank youâ is for you to focus on how I am, rather than whether or not Iâm causing a problem for you. This shift may seem subtle, but itâs not. Instead of my being âwelcomeâ to whatever caused me to say âthank you,â Iâm no longer welcome if your being kind creates any kind of discomfort or issue for you.
The real problem with âno problemâ is that the underlying sense of graciousness that has always been implied with âyour welcomeâ is lost. Graciousness means politeness, courtesy, charm and generosity of good spirit. None of these are connoted in a âno problemâ reply.
I donât think those who mindlessly say âno problemâ even consider that some hear this as a mildly rude way to respond to a âthank you.â They donât hear the loss of graciousness because they didnât grow up feeling it with âyouâre welcome.â
The upshot is this: Knowingly or not, a âno problemâ reply connotes a willingness to be kind or helpful as long as one isnât being put out. But feeling truly welcome is very different than hearing that youâre not creating a problem.

No to plastic bag bans
Purchasers of produce and food products would not have a ready resource to dispose of food waste in a sealed fashion, which would proliferate insect, bird and rodent growth. The disabled would be unable to carry purchases of fluids, cans or other heavy items without risk of breakage. Purchases of food, beverages and other items by tourists would be impacted and cause loss of tourist dollars.
If a ban for purposes of protecting wildlife is necessary, then limit the ban geographically to an area near the beach, not in the supermarkets and shopping areas. Collecting money for paper bags is a harmful intrusion into a depressed economy that discourages consumers. If you make shopping difficult, the customers will go elsewhere every time.
