Lady M x Baccarat food truck at South Coast Plaza let’s them eat cake
New York City’s luxury confections brand, Lady M, decided to take cake on the road back in 2018. Which was around the same time French luxury crystal manufacture, Baccarat, was looking for a creative way to share their crystal tableware with a wider audience. The two teamed up to create the Lady M x Baccarat Cake Truck, which serves Lady M’s signature Mille Crêpes on Baccarat crystal plates.
“The collaboration with Lady M is very special to us,†said Ward Simmons, senior vice president of marketing and visuals for Baccarat. “Our mission was we wanted to be more accessible to people.â€
The fancy food truck arrived at South Coast Plaza, near the Macy’s Mens store, on Thursday for a three-day visit that ends at 6 p.m. Saturday.
“We specialize in creating a luxury cake that has a luxury experience with it,†said Alvarez Symonette, chief of staff at Lady M Confections. “The majority of the cakes we make have 20 layers of handmade crepes and each of those cakes will also have flavored pastry cream made with natural ingredients.â€
Lady M Confections has a long relationship with Baccarat that dates back to the opening of the flagship Lady M store in Manhattan, where founder Ken Romaniszyn installed Baccarat chandeliers. The truck also features Baccarat chandeliers and sconces and custom artwork by 3D artist Kurt Wenner painted on the side, depicting French bakers assembling cakes.
“He is famous for doing 3D design around the world so we said, let’s go with the best,†said Symonette.
Lady M’s desserts, like the new Strawberry Swirl Mille Crêpes, are served on Baccarat tableware and beverages are offered up in their crystal barware. They can be enjoyed at cafe-style seating set up outside the truck.
“For us it is all about providing exceptional experiences for our guests,†said Debra Gunn Downing, executive director of marketing for South Coast Plaza. “We have two luxury brands coming together to create this great experience.â€
Simmons said South Coast Plaza was interested in hosting the truck early in its inception, but the COVID pandemic delayed the event.
“South Coast Plaza was one of the first people we had promised this cake truck to,†said Simmons. “They literally waited almost three years.â€
“It finally came to fruition,†Downing said, “And we are happy to have the first West Coast appearance of the truck.â€
The experience continues inside the mall at the Baccarat boutique where complimentary champagne is served. The event also highlights Baccarat’s expanded partnership with Harvesters, an organization of women that raises funds and awareness to end hunger in Orange County. Baccarat hosted Harvesters members at the boutique on Thursday, making a 20% donation back to Harvesters on any purchases they made.
Mostly, Simmons said he hoped guests have found the event sweet and special.
“At the end of the day we just want people to enjoy the space,†said Simmons. “We just want you to sit back and enjoy the product, enjoy the cake and enjoy the experience.â€
