Rep. Michele Bachmann will seek reelection to the House

Rep. Michele Bachmann, having seen her bid for the presidency come to an early end, said Wednesday that she will seek reelection to her House seat.

“I am very thrilled to be in the position that I am today, and I am looking forward to continuing,” Bachmann told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Bachmann is currently serving her third term representing Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District. She raised $13.5 million in her 2010 campaign, winning the Republican-leaning seat by 13 points.

The state has not yet completed the process of redrawing congressional boundaries to reflect population shifts in the 2010 census, which could alter the dynamics of Bachmann’s district.

“Obviously we’ll see what happens with these maps. ... But I do intend to run again,” she told the Star Tribune.

After a quick start that included a first-place finish in the Iowa straw poll, Bachmann’s bid for the GOP presidential nomination finished with a whimper. She quit the race after a disappointing finish in the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

In the Star Tribune interview, she disputed the notion that the loss diminished her standing at home.

“What people recognize is I’ve worked extremely hard on their behalf,” she said.

Minnesota Democrats responded in a statement, saying that “the American people have overwhelmingly rejected her extreme right-wing agenda, and the people of Minnesota have shown the same dissatisfaction.”
