Opinion: What Americans should expect from President Trump — and his supporters
- Share via
To the editor: Instead of asking what Donald Trump’s supporters expect from the president-elect, perhaps we should ask what most of the country should expect of those supporters over the next four years. (“What do Trump supporters expect?” Opinion, Jan. 1)
I hope the people who voted for Trump question everything he has promised and avail themselves of the many independent and reliable fact-checking resources on the Internet. I hope they will become more demanding of the information to which they are entitled about the man they have so enthusiastically endorsed and possibly recognize that character and integrity are important in a leader.
Sometimes ignorance is bliss, but in most cases it is disastrous; let’s hope this is not one of those cases.

To the editor: Honestly, I’m still trying to understand and forgive my fellow Americans for actually voting for a person I find totally unqualified for president.
For the first time in my life I begin a new year with great trepidation. Will the new president actually weaken the protections we have gained in the areas of women rights, gay rights, global warming, clean energy and healthcare for our fellow citizens?
Will he continue to tweet first before he has all the facts? Will he continue to lash out at citizens who give his restaurants bad reviews instead of focusing on the enormous issues that are on his presidential plate? Will he forever be boastful of things he actually didn’t do? Will he ever fully divest himself of his 100-plus companies (in 18 countries) so that we Americans can feel confident that his decisions are not self-serving?
As 2017 begins, my heart and head are troubled.
