To the editor: It is heartening that Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti took a pass on running for president in 2020.

Garcetti has considerable skills, but at the moment he is unqualified for higher office. Now, he can stay off campaign planes and work full time on the job to which he was elected.

Los Angeles has so many serious problems that demand the attention of a full-time, focused mayor, the biggest being homelessness. It is the continuation of this crisis that disqualifies Garcetti for higher office.

Perhaps now, having decided he will not run for president in 2020, the mayor can dedicate his time and effort to get to work here and solve the homelessness emergency. If he succeeds at that, then he will have a reasonable basis and a noteworthy achievement on which to run for higher office.

Solve homelessness in Los Angeles, and the foundation will be laid on which to campaign. Until then, Garcetti is just another mayor with the Potomac itch.

To the editor: I wish to announce that I will not be running for president in the next election. Since my chances of winning are no less than those of Garcetti, I thought the Los Angeles Times would like to know.
