Readers React: Obamacare lawsuit a reaction to White House dishonesty

To the editor: Contrary to The Times editorial board, the House Republicans’ lawsuit over the Affordable Care Act is not shameful, but rather well-suited for the times. (“The GOP’s shameful lawsuit against Obamacare,” Editorial, Nov. 24)

Obama has behaved shamefully. He misled the public over Obamacare (“If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep that”) and disregarded key parts of his own healthcare law while refusing to enforce portions of immigration law enacted by his predecessors.

The House GOP, with an expanded majority following the 2014 election, has every right to sue.

What is also shameful is The Times’ poverty-shaming of Republicans, as though the poor are entitled to other people’s money to subsidize their health insurance. Many responsible adults had already paid for coverage only to lose their plans and their providers following the passage of an unpopular law.

To the editor: I’ve added something new to my Thanksgiving list of things to be grateful for: health insurance.

When I volunteered to help recently at a Covered California event in Richmond, Calif., the people in line before the doors opened gave new meaning to the phrase “7 million enrolled.” All looked hopeful; one fellow had all his important papers clutched in a brown bag rolled under his arm.

We can all be thankful that our tax dollars are being better spent to help make available preventive care in doctors’ offices rather than more expensive emergency room care.
