Readers React: Liquor store owner profits from alcoholism

To the editor: Question for Stuart Kozal, a liquor store owner in Whiteclay, Neb. — which has four such businesses that sold 4 million cans of beer last year in a town with a population of 12 — who says “I don’t feel responsible” for feeding the addiction of his Native American neighbors because if his store closed people would simply drive 20 miles farther to buy beer in the next town: (“In Nebraska, ministry reaches out to Lakota on an alcohol-ravaged skid row,” Sept. 13)
So what you’re saying, Mr. Kozal, is that as long as people are going to drink themselves into an early grave anyway, you want to be the one to profit from it? How, sir, do you sleep at night?
In fact, the person who says “It keeps me awake every damn night” is the attorney whose lawsuit against this injustice was dismissed, when he thinks about all the children born with fetal alcohol syndrome.
