Readers React: L.A. City Hall caught napping

To the editor: The hundreds of millions of dollars the city and county of Los Angeles have paid out in past decades in legal judgments and settlements reached the apotheosis of sad absurdity last week with the City Council approving a $26-million settlement to sanitation workers who had sued over a prohibition on napping on their lunch hours, eating outside their routes and other insanely nonsensical rules. (“L.A. to pay $26 million for ban on naps by garbage-truck drivers,†Aug. 12)

Given such a monumental case of overregulation, the people who promulgated these rules should not only be fired but forced to ante up to help defray the cost of the settlement.

There have been many examples over the years of L.A. being governed by gross stupidity, but this beats all.
