Readers React: LAPD’s hypocrisy on police videos
To the editor: Recently, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck fought for new rules to permit police officers to review the video evidence of their department-issued cameras prior to writing their incident reports. (“Officers in fatal Venice shooting wore privately owned body cameras,” May 12)
Speaking about the fatal shooting of a Venice man by an LAPD officer, Beck said he would not release the video-recording of the shooting to the public because it shouldn’t “be out there to taint witnesses.”
Right.
Since police are witnesses to such incidents as the Venice killing, as well as potential defendants, we don’t want them to be tainted by viewing the video recording before making their statements.
