Readers React: Why Senate Republicans lack a popular mandate
To the editor: Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should be temperate in the use of his GOP majority. Recall that the Senate reflects the will of the states, not the people. (“Mitch McConnell sings ‘Kumbaya,’†Op-Ed, Jan. 10)
In her 2012 reelection, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) received almost one-third as many votes as the total of all Republican Senate candidates did in 2014. She won by a greater number of votes than the combined number of votes that all the Republican Senate candidates won by in 2014.
As long as a vote for the Senate in Wyoming counts about 65 times more than a vote in California, the Senate will continue to reflect the more conservative elements of the U.S. population.
