Letters: California’s rail project off the tracks
Re “Rail project sees another setback,” Dec. 5
It’s a relief to see the good folks in the Central Valley and wise federal regulators say “oh no you don’t” to high-speed rail construction plans.
When the proponents of this boondoggle envisioned the regulatory problems of laying rail tracks in a direct line through urban areas, they decided to detour way out east where nobody would object. This alone dooms the project; a train journey from L.A. that meanders to the Bay Area would be too slow to attract riders.
Finally people are realizing that using 19th century technology — laying rails for trains — is silly and cost-prohibitive. Need to get there fast? Fly. No rails are required.
