Readers React: Don’t cast aside veteran teachers

It is an outrage that Marshall Tuck, a candidate for superintendent of public instruction, believes that, in an economic crunch, the “older, tired” teachers should be let go and the “young, bright” ones retained. (“Contest for California schools chief heats up,” Column, May 18)
Tuck has degrees in political science and business, not education. If his motive is to make education less expensive by firing older teachers, who will serve as role models for the young ones?
Tuck’s proposal is another expensive, short-term solution to a long-term problem.
