Letters: Defending a Dependency Court judge

Re “Targeting a judge,” Opinion, July 30

I was surprised to read of the L.A. Department of County Counsel’s accusation that Judge Amy Pellman is “endangering children” in her rulings in Dependency Court. My experience with Pellman was quite different.

I represented a wife in a divorce action that was before Pellman before she was transferred to Dependency Court. I had the opportunity to witness Pellman’s rulings dozens of times. Though she did not always rule in my client’s favor, she was always courteous, fair, knowledgeable and patient, particularly with parties who were not represented by counsel.

Was she tough? Often she was, but it was usually directed at parties and counsel who were not prepared or were less than candid with her.

If Pellman were still handling divorce cases, I would welcome an assignment to her court. She is an outstanding jurist and a credit to the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
