US to build new school for dependents at Guantanamo base

MIAMI — The children of military and civilian personnel at the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will be getting a new school in another sign that the Navy won’t be leaving the installation anytime soon.
A Navy contract announcement says the service will be seeking a contractor to build a new school for between $40 million and $60 million. Plans call for consolidating the two campuses of the W.T. Sampson Unit School into a single building.
About 200 students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade currently attend the school named for a Spanish-American War commander.
The announcement published Tuesday said the contract would be awarded in January and take nearly 2 ½ years to complete.
The U.S. has said it intends to keep the base despite improved relations with Cuba.
