Freight trains collide in Arkansas, killing 2 people, hurting 2 others
Two people died and two others were injured after two Union Pacific trains carrying toxic chemicals collided in Arkansas early Sunday, officials said reported.
A portion of the town of Hoxie was evacuated shortly after the 3 a.m. crash, according to the Arkansas State Police. The deceased and the injured were believed to be crew members on the freight trains.
Although both trains were carrying toxic materials, it appears that none was released, Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokesman Kendell Snyder said. He said he did not know what toxic substances the trains were carrying.
A fire broke out after the crash, Snyder said. Diesel fuel that spilled from one of the trains probably contributed to the fire, he said.
The cause of the crash was unknown. An investigation will be headed by Union Pacific officials.
