8 injured in Philadelphia natural gas explosion

Philadelphia officials blame a natural gas leak for an explosion that injured eight people and led to the collapse of three homes in the Whitman section of the city on Monday, the mayor’s office announced.
City and utility officials are investigating the cause of the leak, Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s office said in a statement emailed to reporters.
The explosion took place at 11:09 a.m. in the 400 block of Daly Street, according to city officials. Three homes, 426, 428 and 430 Daly St., collapsed.
Construction work was taking place at 428 Daly St., a “permitted construction site.”
Eight people, including three children, were taken to hospitals. Seven, including the children, were in stable condition. One adult was listed in critical condition.
Seventy homes in the area were evacuated but many residents were being allowed to return, the mayor’s office said.
