National Train Show

Highlights: Model-train displays, operating model railroads and landscapes made from Legos, free appraisals of old train sets, children’s play area with trains and games.
Cost: $10, $5 children 6 to 12, 5 and younger free.

Kite Festival & West Coast Kite Championships
When, where: July 26 and 27, Cesar Chavez Park, 11 Spinnaker Way.
Highlights: Kite making, kite ballet, kite battles, an attempt at a world record for giant creature kites.

Great Kitchens tour

Summer Concerts

SAN FRANCISCO
Slow Food Nation
When, where: Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 at Civic Center Plaza, 99 Grove St., and Fort Mason Center, at Buchanan Street and Marina Boulevard.
Highlights: The Taste event, with workshops, demonstrations and tastings; speakers on food issues; concert with Gnarls Barkley, G Love & Special Sauce, Ozomatli and more.
