Tom Brookshier
Eagles star and NFL broadcaster
Tom Brookshier, 78, an All-Pro defensive back who played on the Philadelphia Eagles’ 1960 championship team and later became Pat Summerall’s broadcast partner for NFL games on CBS, died of cancer Friday, the Eagles announced.
Brookshier played for the Eagles from 1953 to 1961. He was a 10th-round draft pick out of Colorado, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1953. He also served for two years in the Air Force.
“He bled green, and I will always cherish our conversations and the relationship that we fostered throughout my tenure,†said Eagles Coach Andy Reid.
At CBS, Brookshier’s most famous pairing was with Summerall as the network’s lead NFL announcers beginning in 1975. They also broadcast three Super Bowls.
“He became like a brother to me,†Summerall told the Philadelphia Inquirer on Saturday. “He was the best man in my wedding. He was as close a friend as I ever had.â€
