Hayward man killed in Afghanistan

An Army Special Forces soldier from Northern California has died in combat in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Sunday.

Sgt. 1st-class James Grissom, 31, of Hayward, died Thursday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany from injuries incurred three days earlier in Paktika province, Afghanistan. Grissom was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Grissom was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star. He had served in Iraq and was on his fifth overseas deployment.

Before enlisting in the Army in 2003, he graduated from the Art Institute of San Francisco with an associate’s degree in computer animation. He is survived by his wife, parents and sister.
