Rescuers find man who jumped off Venice Pier safe at home

After searching for more than seven hours, rescuers found a 39-year-old man who jumped off the Venice Beach pier about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies found David Matthew Rose safe at his Marina del Rey home about 10 a.m., U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Andrea Anderson said.

An estimated 30 emergency and law enforcement personnel had been searching for the man, who left some belongings on the pier before he jumped, according to Lidia Barillas, spokeswoman for the lifeguard division of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The Coast Guard looked for Rose by boat and by helicopter, while lifeguards searched the water near the pier, authorities said.

Witnesses had told authorities they initially saw Rose swimming but then lost sight of him, Barillas said.

After Rose was found, the fire department’s lifeguard division reminded the public on Twitter that jumping off the pier is against the law.

Authorities have not said whether they will file charges against Rose.
