Knife-wielding man shot, wounded by police in South L.A.
A man wielding a knife in South L.A. was shot and wounded by a Los Angeles police officer early Saturday morning.
The shooting occurred just after midnight when police responded to a call about a mentally ill man in the 1400 block of West 29th Street.
When officers arrived, they were confronted by a man armed with a knife, said Lt. Scot Williams of the LAPD’s Southwest Division.
“The officer gave the suspect several commands to drop the knife,†Williams said. “He refused to comply, and one officer deployed a Taser device at the suspect. Another officer was involved in an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground.â€
Williams said he did not know how many rounds were fired or where the man was struck. He said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening, but he could not elaborate further.
The man was taken into custody and taken to a hospital.
A knife was recovered at the scene near where the man fell, Williams said. No officers were injured, he said.
