A 175-acre brush fire near Santa Clarita that at one point threatened dozens of homes is 50% contained, officials said Sunday.
The South fire began about 2:50 p.m. Saturday and quickly spread, pushed by wind gusts of up to 25 mph., officials said. Mandatory evacuations were ordered for more than 200 homes in surrounding hillside communities.
But about 300 firefighters, assisted by air tankers and water-dropping helicopters, made good progress through the evening, and evacuation orders were lifted late Saturday.
On Sunday morning, the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that the fire was 50% contained. Hundreds of firefighters remain at the scene.
