81-year-old hiker found on San Jacinto trail dies

An 81-year-old hiker found unresponsive on a mountain trail in Riverside County was identified Monday as a North Californian.
Ulrich Luscher, 81, died around 4:30 p.m. Sunday at a fire station in Idyllwild.
Officials with the Riverside County Fire Department got a call around 2:30 p.m. and sent about 25 firefighters hiking into the wilderness to find him. A helicopter also searched from the sky.
They discovered Luscher, a resident of Orinda, a city in Northern California, unresponsive on a hiking trail on San Jacinto Peak, the highest peak in Riverside County.
He had no pulse, spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.
Luscher was found about a half mile from Wellman’s Divide, a 9,700-foot-high vista that offers views of the Palomar Mountains.
The Riverside County coroner’s office had not yet identified a cause of death or discovered any injuries, but there were no signs of foul play, according to a press release.
