Fatal shooting of boy with replica assault rifle spurs protest march

Barricades in Santa Rosa have been set up to prepare for a march protesting the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy wielding a pellet gun that looked like an assault rifle.

Andy Lopez was shot seven times last week by a sheriff’s deputy who mistook his pellet gun for an authentic assault rifle. Law enforcement authorities said deputies had responded to a report of a “suspicious person†in a southwest Santa Rosa neighborhood.

“The deputy’s mind-set was that he was fearful that he was going to be shot,†Santa Rosa Police Lt. Paul Henry said.

The march, according to The Press Democrat, was planned to go from downtown Santa Rosa to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and end by 5 p.m. Organizers expected as many as 1,500 people to participate.

More than 1,000 people attended a service for the boy Sunday.
