Central Coast power outage blamed on equipment failure
A widespread power outage that darkened most of California’s Central Coast was caused by equipment failure, Pacific Gas & Electric Co said.
The utility tweeted that an equipment failure at one of its substations knocked out power Sunday to as many as 150,000 customers.
Most of the power was restored by Monday morning, the company said.
Santa Maria Police Chief Ralph Martin told Associated Press that the outage forced the station to use a backup generator. The department put extra officers on the street to direct traffic and to respond to reports of vandalism, Martin said.
