Suspect shot before Santa Ana police pursuit has died, police say
A suspect shot by police Thursday afternoon before a car chase on the streets of Santa Ana has died, authorities said.
Three other men who sped away from the scene of the shooting are in custody after they hit and fatally injured a pedestrian with the vehicle they were in, police said.
Santa Ana police spokesman Anthony Bertagna said officers were near the West Central Avenue and South Rosewood Avenue when they saw “some kind of criminal activity.â€
“They contact these individuals, that contact escalates into a physical altercation, and that escalates into an officer-involved shooting,†Bertagna said, stressing that the exact details of the incident remain unclear.
Police then pursued the other suspects. The chase ended near MacArthur Boulevard and Flower Street, where the pedestrian was struck and killed. Bertagna said no details about the pedestrian were immediately available.
The suspects fled on foot and police set up a perimeter, Bertagna said. One suspect was located by a police dog, one was stunned with a Taser and one surrendered. All three were in custody Thursday evening, Bertagna said.
The suspect injured by officer gunfire was pronounced dead at a hospital about 4:30 p.m, the spokesman said.
