A vegetation fire in Newport Beach that forced the evacuation of an apartment complex showered a Mercedes-Benz dealership in ash has been extinguished.

The fire broke out in the city’s Back Bay area, sending smoke over the nearby 73 toll road.

The 2-acre to 5-acre blaze at Jamboree Road and the 73 was reported at about 4:30 p.m., said Jennifer Manzella, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Firefighters from Newport Beach and other agencies responded to the fire.

As a precaution, the Baypointe apartment complex on Jamboree Road was evacuated, Manzella said.

The only structure reportedly affected was the Fletcher Jones Motorcars dealership at Jamboree Road and Bayview Way, Manzella said. The property was clouded with smoke and sprinkled with ash.

The Newport Beach Police Department put out an alert telling residents to avoid Jamboree Road from University Drive to Macarthur Boulevard.
