An adult and two children were killed Monday morning when the vehicle they were in rear-ended a big rig in the heart of the Grapevine in Castaic, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 1 a.m. on the southbound 5 Freeway at Templin Highway near Castaic Lake, said CHP officer Francisco Villalobos.

A big rig was stopped in a brake check lane on the southbound side just before the highway begins a steep downward grade when it was rear-ended by a Honda Accord.

The man driving the car was killed, along with a boy and girl who were riding in the passenger seat and seat behind the driver, Villalobos said. The car was pinned under the big rig and the three victims died at the scene.

It’s unclear what caused the crash and the investigation is ongoing, Villalobos said. The identities of the three victims could be available by Monday afternoon, an official with the Los Angeles County coroner said. The crash did not affect traffic.
