A man in a Fontana Target store removed a knife from its wrapping and stabbed himself to death Wednesday, police said.

Surveillance video shows the man, whose identity has not been released, walking into the store at 15272 Summit Ave. and heading directly to the kitchen section, according to Martha Guzman-Hurtado, a spokeswoman for the Fontana Police Department.

Guzman-Hurtado said the man removed a knife from its packaging and used it to stab himself in the torso.

Police arrived at the store at 11:07 a.m. and found the man lying in an aisle of the housewares section. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The store remained open for two hours as police investigated the incident, KABC-TV Channel 7 reported.

Target did not address concerns expressed by some customers about the store allowing patrons to continue to shop there during the investigation.

“At Target, the safety and security of our guests and team members is a top priority. ... We are working closely with law enforcement on this matter,†the company said in a statement.

“Once it was determined there was no danger to guests or team members, we sectioned off the entire area to allow the police to investigate. Following that investigation, we did close the store, and the store remains closed,†the company said. “We anticipate reopening soon.â€
