Shotgun-wielding man arrested after hotel standoff, police say
A man with a shotgun who barricaded himself in a room at the Union Hotel in downtown Los Angeles was safely apprehended Sunday morning, police said.
The suspect, who authorities said was in his mid-30s, was taken into custody shortly after 9 a.m. after a six-hour standoff in the 700 block of East 9th Street, according to Sgt. German Hurtado of the Los Angeles Police Department.
The man had earlier brandished a gun during a heated argument with a neighbor, causing the neighbor to flee to his room and call 911, Hurtado said.
Police said the LAPD’s SWAT team arrived on the scene and attempted to make contact, but the suspect had locked himself in his room and refused to come out.
Officers eventually deployed gas canisters, driving the man out of the room. He was then arrested “without incident,†Hurtado said. No injuries were reported.
In initial interviews with officers, the suspect refused to give his name, police said.
