Authorities continued Saturday to investigate the shooting of a 37-year-old man who fled a Long Beach motel parking lot and attempted to run over a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy.

Deputies from the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station arrived Friday about 12:20 p.m. at a motel in the 1100 block of Pacific Coast Highway in search of a man wanted in the assault of a police officer, the Sheriff’s department said in a statement.

When deputies approached the suspect, he got into his car and attempted to run over one of the deputies while escaping the area.

The suspect was hit by gunfire and crashed his car into a fence, the statement said. He continued to push on the accelerator but the car was stuck on a concrete median and did not move.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital. His condition was unknown, but he was expected to survive. Deputies discovered a loaded handgun strapped to his body, the statement said.

Deputy-involved shootings in which someone is wounded are investigated by several agencies, including the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s internal affairs bureau.
