L.A. Now Live: County supervisors react to sheriff’s corruption probe

Join Times staff writer Seema Mehta at 9 a.m. Thursday for an L.A. Now Live discussion about how Los Angeles County supervisors are reacting to this week’s federal charges against 18 former and current Sheriff’s Department officials.

Those charges and indictments, released Monday, included allegations of conspiracy and improperly arresting, searching and beating visitors at jails, among others.

At least one of the supervisors is using the news as an opportunity to call for a citizens’ commission to oversee the agency.

While the supervisors control the Sheriff’s Department budget, they have no official power over Sheriff Lee Baca because he is an elected official. Nonetheless, the supervisors have been moving to play a larger role in the department’s affairs.
