Join Times staff writer Seema Mehta at 12:30 p.m. for an L.A. Now Live discussion on the clashing brands of conservatism on display over the weekend at a state Republican convention.
The two leading candidates to challenge Gov. Jerry Brown’s reelection -- Neel Kashkari and Tim Donnelly -- each tried to convince party activists that they could oust the Democratic incumbent.
At the recent state party convention, delegates spoke openly about the grim outlook for Republican statewide candidates.
In a state where only 29% of voters are Republican, down from 39% in 1990, the party has set a low bar for recovery. One of its top goals for November is not to win control of the Legislature but rather to prevent Democrats from regaining their two-thirds supermajority in the Senate and keeping the one they have in the Assembly.
Mehta can answer questions about these dueling brands of conservatism between Kashkari and Donnelly, as well as what may come from the apparent battered confidence of California Republicans.
