The Los Angeles County coroner’s office will investigate the death of a 16-year-old football player who collapsed during a high school game last week, a department official said Sunday.

The agency will try to determine what caused the death of Dodi Soza, who was playing for Downey High School when he collapsed Thursday during a game at Lynwood High.

Coroner’s Lt. Cheryl MacWillie said Soza’s young age was the main reason why her office had decided to investigate.

Soza, a running back, was playing for his school’s junior varsity team when he collapsed on the field, according to KTLA. He died Saturday.

The mayor of Downey, Mario A. Guerra, said in a Twitter posting, “Our community mourns the passing of one of [our] own today. DHS football player Dodi Soza. Our broken hearts are with his family. God bless him.â€
