Kendrick Lamar to receive key to the city of Compton
Last year, Kendrick Lamar wrote a love letter to Compton through his music video “King Kunta,†featuring the rapper and his friends dancing through his hometown. Next month, his love letter will be answered -- with a key to the city.
Lamar, born in Compton, will receive the key to the city on Feb. 13 in a special ceremony, Compton Mayor Aja Brown announced on Twitter on Thursday. The 28-year-old rapper is well-knowing for paying serious homage to his roots.
“He represents Compton with great pride and I am honored to present him with the Key to the City, which symbolizes our deep appreciation for his philanthropic work and commitment to our community,†the mayor said in a prepared statement. “Mr. Lamar’s achievements further Compton’s legacy of ingenuity and excellence.â€
