5 injured when driver hits pedestrians outside Palo Alto cafe
Five people were injured Thursday when an elderly driver plowed into them outside a Palo Alto cafe while attempting to parallel park, officials said,
One pedestrian suffered critical injuries while four others and the driver, who was described as being in his 90s, sustained minor injuries, according to the Palo Alto Police Department.
The driver attempted to parallel park his Nissan in front of University Cafe in the 200 block of University Avenue and may have accidentally accelerated into a parked car, police said in a statement.
After striking the car, he reportedly drove up onto the sidewalk and hit the five pedestrians.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash, adding that it appears the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
He has not been cited or arrested, police said.
