The officer was traveling south on Citrus Avenue when the driver of an SUV traveling north on the same road made a left turn in front of Corder onto East Puente Street and crashed into him. Photos from the scene showed damage to the front of the SUV.

The driver of the SUV, a 75-year-old woman, was the only person in the vehicle, authorities said.

Cpt. Derek Webster said the unidentified woman was also treated for injuries at the scene. No further information about her condition was released.

The 28-year-old officer joined the Covina Police Department in 2007, Webster said, he then joined the traffic unit in May 2014.

Corder grew up in Covina and graduated from Charter Oak High School, Webster said.

“Our department is grieving as family does,†Webster said, “as in we will help each other through this, but will never be the same without him.â€

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the crash. The accident is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, Webster said.
