Cost to fight Mountain fire near Idyllwild reaches $4 million

The cost so far to fight the 14,200-acre Mountain fire near Idyllwild is $4 million, the U.S. Forest Service said Wednesday.

About 2,210 firefighters are battling the blaze that started Monday afternoon and that has already destroyed 15 structures, including six homes.

As crews work to protect communities, evacuations were ordered in the Andreas Canyon Club, Bonita Vista, Pine Springs and the Zen Mountain Center.

Protecting Idyllwild, Hemet Lake and Palm Springs is a “high priority,†according to a statement from the forest service.

The fire appears to be moving both over the crest of the mountain and back down the mountain south of Palm Springs, though weather changes are anticipated, officials said.

Highway 243 has been reopened.
