City of Hope names first provost and scientific director
City of Hope, an independent hospital and medical research center, has selected the director of Northwestern University’s cancer center as its first provost and scientific director.
Dr. Steven T. Rosen will guide the scientific direction of the biomedical research, treatment and education institution, and help shape its research and educational vision, hospital officials said in a statement.
He previously served as director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and director of Cancer Programs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
“Dr. Rosen’s experience and vision will create the environment necessary to accelerate the pace of meaningful discoveries that extend both quality and length of life,†said City of Hope President and soon-to-be Chief Executive Robert Stone.
Rosen will collaborate with the Duarte hospital’s scientists, clinicians and administrators to develop “basic science into practical benefits†for patients with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
“Though I have mixed emotions about leaving Northwestern, I am excited by the opportunity to lead a world class free-standing cancer hospital and be close to my family in California,†Rosen said in a statement.
In his 32 years at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Rosen won numerous awards, continued to care for patients, and guided the cancer center to “international prominence,†the university said in a statement.
Rosen’s last day at Northwestern will be January 31.
