A police pursuit Tuesday afternoon spanned three counties and reached speeds of more than 120 mph before ending in San Diego County, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver refused to stop about 12:50 p.m. when a CHP officer on the northbound 710 Freeway near Washington Boulevard tried to pull him over for an alleged speeding violation, Officer Patrick Kimball said.

From there, the chase crossed the 60 and 605 freeways. The pursuit was handed over to CHP officers in Orange County about 1:20 p.m. when the driver crossed into their jurisdiction on the southbound 5 Freeway headed toward San Diego.

Amid the chase, the driver dropped packages on the southbound 605 Freeway near Slauson Avenue, authorities said. Officers have since found the packages and believe they could contain drugs, Kimball said.

The driver frequently crossed over all freeway lanes, drove on the shoulder and dangerously cut between cars. He surrendered in Del Mar just after 2 p.m.
