Boy dies from self-inflicted gunshot at Boy Scouts camp in San Diego
Reporting from San Diego — A 12-year-old boy died Monday from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head at a Boy Scouts camp on Fiesta Island in San Diego’s Mission Bay, police said.
The incident is being investigated as a suicide, police said, adding that a gun was confiscated at the scene.
The Fiesta Island Youth Camp, which is taken over by the Boy Scouts during the summer, remained on lockdown as police questioned other boys and their parents. Crisis counselors have also been made available.
No firearm training was part of the Boy Scouts program.
Lt. Mike Hastings said one of the things that police want to know is “where did the gun come from?â€
The boy who died was part of a troop from Las Vegas, officials said.
Each summer the Boy Scouts hold weeklong camps at the island offering sailing and camping activities.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and all those who experienced this tragedy,†the Boy Scouts of America said in a statement. “Our top priority is providing support to our community and for those in the grieving process.â€
