Gilbert Arenas arrested for having truck full of fireworks
Three-time NBA all-star Gilbert Arenas was arrested early Thursday in Los Angeles for driving a pickup truck full of illegal fireworks, the CHP said.
Driving about 80 mph in a silver Ford F-150 Raptor, Arenas was initially pulled over on the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley for speeding in a 65 mph zone, officials said.
He got off the westbound freeway at Woodman Avenue, where CHP officers immediately noticed a “sizable amount†of fireworks in the truck’s bed and cab, said Officer Ming Hsu, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.
Arenas told officers he was going home, according to a statement from the CHP.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad disposal team arrived to take possession of the fireworks for destruction, Hsu said. The fireworks were determined to be illegal in the state of California and had been purchased out of state, he added.
Arenas, 32, was booked for possession of fireworks within the city limits and released after posting a $100 bail, according to online inmate records.
In January 2010, Arenas was suspended from the Washington Wizards and charged with felony gun possession after he revealed he had been keeping guns in his locker. He spent 30 days in a halfway house and registered as a gun offender, in addition to making a monetary donation to victims of violent crimes and doing 400 hours of community service.
