Woman caught on video stealing packages from home gets jail sentence

A woman who was caught on video by an Alhambra homeowner stealing packages from his doorstep has been convicted and sentenced to six months in jail, prosecutors said.

Rianna Medina, 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree commercial burglary and grand theft of personal property Monday in connection with the May 10 theft.

Images of Medina appeared on social media in May after an Alhambra resident confronted her for stealing his packages and recorded the entire exchange on his cellphone. He then turned the video over to police, who distributed it to the media, asking for help in identifying the suspect.

The 21-second video began when the resident had just pulled up in his car as a woman walked down his front walkway with two large boxes in her arms.

“You know I live here,†the man said. “If I were you, I’d put that down.â€

“Why?†Medina replied.

“Because those are my stuff,†he said. “I live here.â€

“No you don’t, my mom lives here,†she claimed.

“I’m going to call the police on you,†the man calmly told her.

Medina then dropped the boxes and walked off, the video showed.

Tips from the community led to Medina’s capture at a Rosemead motel two days later.

As part of her plea, Medina was also sentenced to five years of formal probation and to complete 180 days of a live-in residential treatment program after she leaves jail. L.A. County Sheriff’s Department records show she has been in jail since May 13 and is expected to be released Aug. 1.
