13-year-old skateboarder dies after being struck by car in South L.A.
Authorities on Thursday identified a 13-year-old skateboader who was fatally struck by a car in South Los Angeles.
Jarek Trejo, of Los Angeles, died from his injuries Wednesday night near Hooper Avenue and E. 77th Place in Florence-Firestone. The boy was identified by Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
On Wednesday, a red 2014 Ford Mustang was traveling northbound shortly before 10 p.m. on Hooper Avenue at a speed of 45 to 50 miles per hour when Trejo rode his skateboard into the roadway, into the path of the oncoming vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Trejo, who was accompanied by a parent at the time of the collision, was struck by the right front of the vehicle and thrown to the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene by firefighters, authorities said.
The 18-year-old male driver of the Mustang remained on the scene and was given a field sobriety test, but he is not suspected of having been driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol said in a statement. The vehicle was taken for evidence, and the driver, a Los Angeles resident, was not arrested, authorities said.
