Inauguration of Mayor-elect Eric Garcetti is underway at City Hall
Los Angeles is about to swear in its 42nd mayor in a ceremony now underway on the front steps of City Hall, even though Mayor-elect Eric Garcetti officially took the oath Friday from City Clerk June Lagmay.
Hundreds of onlookers are watching from VIP seats on Spring Street or standing on the sloping lawn of Grand Park across the way.
After the new mayor, six new City Council members, a new city attorney and city controller are administered their oaths, Garcetti will deliver a speech intended to set the stage for his four-year term.
Garcetti began his day at the First A.M.E. Church in South Los Angeles, where he announced that one of his former rivals in the mayor’s race -- termed-out City Councilwoman Jan Perry -- would take a senior post in his administration.
