4 killed when SUV runs light, hits Honda
An “explosive†scene littered a Fontana intersection after a sport utility vehicle ran a red light and slammed into two other cars, killing three brothers and an 11-year-old boy, authorities said Monday.
A Chevrolet Suburban carrying the three brothers was traveling east on Baseline Avenue in Fontana on Sunday when it ran a red light at Cherry Avenue and sheared the back off a Honda sedan carrying a 40-year-old Fontana woman and her 11-year-old son, said Sgt. Billy Green of the Fontana Police Department.
The boy, Noah Ferrer, died Monday morning during surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
The SUV ended up wrapped around a power pole at 9:35 p.m. after hitting a Toyota. No one in the Toyota was injured, authorities said. Two of the men in the Suburban — a 35-year-old from Rancho Cucamonga and his 39-year-old brother from Bloomington — were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their 37-year-old brother from Fontana died at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, said Deputy Mark Johnson with the San Bernardino County coroner’s office.
The cause of the crash was under investigation, Green said.
Police found beer cans and firearms in the Suburban, Green said. Authorities did not know whether alcohol played a role, “but we’re definitely looking into it,†he said.
Investigators said it did not appear that the brothers had committed any crimes with the firearms before the crash but were examining why there were so many weapons in the vehicle.
