Echo Park’s Mohawk General Store sells arty essentials

If you live in Echo Park, your new neighborhood general store stocks “provisions” such as a Jielde pink fluorescent desk lamp ($430) and Krista jewelry made from recycled fur ($150 to $300) rather than bags of flour or pick axes.

The idea behind Mohawk General Store, owned by Kevin Carney and his wife, Bo, is to supply basics to an arty enclave -- clothing, furnishings and art, along with shoes by Carney, who designs footwear for the Generic Man and showcases his designs here. Three-quarters of the store’s goods are locally made, and many of the products are recycled, including Generic Man boots made from recycled rain coats ($390).

Ready-for-wrapping gifts include leather key rings by Eugene ($67) and Momo Suzuki’s handmade leather bowls ($40 to $84), plus Vivier clutches made from brightly colored remnant leathers in blue and red nappa that resemble chic bank-deposit bags ($35 to $55). Another find: sunglasses by New York-based Costalots ($190 to $220) with smoke-colored frames. The clothing selection includes T-shirts by Adam Lippes ($38) and a cashmere version by Alex B. ($136).

The store also stocks Repetto flats ($208) and Mary Ping canvas wedges ($100), plus an assortment of men’s shoes from the Generic Man and the Generic Surplus.
