Missed the Daytime Emmys? ‘General Hospital’ won big, Regis Philbin wasn’t there

For those who may have missed the 39th annual Daytime Emmy Awards on Saturday — which aired on cable for the first time on the HLN Channel after airing on CBS in recent years — a brief overview to enjoy with your morning cup of Joe:

ABC’slong-running — and still standing — soap “General Hospital”racked up five awards, including best drama. NBC’s “Today” show, making headlines recently over Ann Curry’s fate on the program, was named best morning show — its fourth win in that category. And the syndicated “Jeopardy” was named best game show.

And Regis Philbin got one last hoorah for his work in daytime ... too bad he and his former co-host weren’t there to enjoy it: “Live with Regis and Kelly” got top billing as best entertainment talk show (its first-ever nod in the category and Philbin and Kelly Ripa were named best talk-show hosts. Philbin ended his tenure on the syndicated morning series last fall; a replacement has not been named to join Ripa as co-host. Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey’s protege Mehmet Oz had his syndicated talker “Dr. Oz” named best informative talk show.

Heather Tom, who won as best lead actress for CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful”and Anthony Geary of “General Hospital” won a record seventh trophy for lead drama actor.

Barbara Walters presented Bill Geddie, executive producer of ABC talk show “The View,” with the life achievement award.

Overall, ABC came out on top with five wins (it was also the network with the most nominations —56), tying with syndicated shows. NBC earned three wins, with CBS and The Food Network tying with two wins each.

The awards, bestowed by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, were held at the Beverly Hilton as scheduled despite a police investigation into the deaths of two people late Friday night at the hotel.
