Sochi Olympics: Keeping up with Kings, Ducks players

SOCHI, Russia — And then there were 12.

The first of 13 Kings and Ducks chosen to represent their respective homelands at the Sochi Olympic hockey tournament was eliminated Tuesday, when Switzerland and Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller lost a qualification playoff game to Latvia.

Here’s a look at how the Kings and Ducks did in Tuesday’s playoff qualification games:

Slovenia 4, Austria 0: Kings center Anze Kopitar scored his team’s first goal, during a first-period power play, as No. 8 Slovenia advanced to a quarterfinal matchup Wednesday against No. 1 Sweden. Kopitar had two shots and was +2 defensively in a game-high 23 minutes and 41 seconds’ ice time. Slovenia will face No. 1 Sweden in a quarterfinal Wednesday.

Russia 4, Norway 0: Kings defenseman Slava Voynov had one shot and was +2 defensively in a team-leading 20:43 as host Russia pulled away from dogged Norway. Fifth-seeded Russia will face No. 4 Finland in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Latvia 3, Switzerland 1: Hiller leaves Sochi with a 2-1-0 record, two shutouts, a 0.67 goals-against average and .971 save percentage. Latvia, coached by Ted Nolan — father of Kings forward Jordan Nolan — will face No. 3 Canada in a quarterfinal Wednesday.

Czech Republic 5, Slovakia 3: No Kings or Ducks in this one, but the Czechs will next face the U.S., which has two Kings (goalie Jonathan Quick and winger Dustin Brown) and one Duck (defenseman Cam Fowler).
