SOUTHERN SECTION RELAYS
At Belmont Plaza

Needing at least a seventh-place finish in the 4x50 medley relay in the final race, San Clemente got it and snapped Irvine’s six-year winning streak in the event Saturday night at Belmont Plaza.

San Clemente junior freestyler Jeff Smith out-touched Los Angeles Loyola’s last swimmer for seventh place to give the Tritons the meet victory after a tight last leg of the race in which San Clemente timed 1:44.16.

San Clemente finished with 188 points, just ahead of Irvine with 184. El Toro finished a distant third with 135 points, despite victories in three of the seven races in the relays-only meet.

Needing a victory to win the meet, Irvine’s 4x50 medley relay team of Lan Doan, Evan Hsiao, Chris Leksano and Drew Vyn placed fourth, not enough to overcome the 164-154 deficit the Vaqueros faced going into the last event.

San Clemente played to its strength with a second-place finish in the second-to-last race, the 4x100 free relay. Irvine finished sixth in the event.

The Tritons also benefited from a scratch in the 4x50 breaststroke relay, where they moved up one place from 14th to 13th, earning six key points instead of four.

Aaron Morelli, Calvin Kagen, Byron Bailey and David Mills finished the 200 Freestyle Relay at 1:30.78 for Los Alamitos (2-0). Bailey and Mills swam the 400 Freestyle Relay with Scott Davidson and Chasen Rysazy in 3:24.55.

Girls

Irvine 89, El Toro 81
Dana Parola swam the second leg of the 400 Freestyle Relay in 58.30 seconds to help Irvine take the final event of the day in 3:50.76 and the Vaqueros (1-1) won the nonleague meet at El Toro.

The Vaqueros (1-1) entered the 400 Free Relay with a slim 79-77 edge, and Parola’s effort and an anchor leg of 53.50 seconds by Tanya Nielsen sealed the victory. June Becktell swam the opening leg and Brittany Wilson swim the third leg of the race.

Nielsen also won the 200 Free in 1:56.65 and the 100 Butterfly in 1:01.49, and helped the Vaqueros to a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, won by El Toro in 2:00.85.

Amanda Traylor swam the 200 Freestyle in 1:56.58 and the 500 Freestyle in 5:14.46 and the team Jessica Lewis, Erin Scully, Irene Oberman and Danielle Pelke won the 200 Freestyle Relay in 1:46.69 for Los Alamitos (1-1).

Lexi Shue of Corona del Mar won the 200 Individual Medley in 2:09.64 then came back to take the 500 Free in 5:03.02 at Corona del Mar. Ashley Chandler and Stephanie Gabert were also double winners for Corona del Mar.

Esperanza improves to 2-1. Sophomore Danielle Arad of Tarbut V’Torah, which was a nonscoring entry, timed 5:27.22 to win the 500 Freestyle and she also won the 200 Freestyle in 1:59.85 as an unattached swimmer in a nonleague meet between Esperanza and visiting Brea Olinda. Arad won the 500 Free title and placed third in the 200 Free in the Southern Section Division IV Championships last season.

La Canada won a tightly contested meet in the final relay event as the Spartans took the first and third places in the 400 Free Relay. The winning 400 relay team of Jennifer Jorgenson, Dana Follis, Jen Wetzel and Renee Nicholas finished in 3:55.71, a CIF qualifying time. Nicholas also won the 100 Freestyle in 55.44.

Senior Jason Gordon won the 200- and 500 Freestyle events in the 2:08.70 and 5:42.74, respectively, for Crossroads (2-1, 1-1 in league) in a Fountain League meet at Crossroads. Also for the Roadrunners, Enoch Kim won the 200 Individual Medley in 2:18.02 and the 100 Backstroke in 1:04.74. Riley Gibbs won the 50 Freestyle (24.68) and the 100 Butterfly (1:03.58) and Gabriel Marantz won the 100 Freestyle (54.70) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:13.70).

Kiley Wong won the 200 Freestyle in 2:08.40 and won the 100 Butterfly in 1:05.84 for Crossroads, but the Roadrunners (1-2, 0-2) fell in the Fountain League meet at Crossroads.
